⚽ Growing Portland’s Youth Pickup Soccer Culture

Over the past few years, Fútbol Fundamentals has hosted a series of free or low-cost community events to give kids more chances to simply play — the way soccer is enjoyed in other parts of the world.

I grew up playing in the streets and parks with friends — no uniforms, no coaches, no scoreboards. Just creativity, competition, and a pure love for the game. Unfortunately, that kind of spontaneous play doesn’t happen much anymore here in Portland — or at least not often enough.

While our events aren’t quite the same as those street matches I grew up with, the goal is similar: to recreate that environment where kids can mix across ages, compete freely, and play for fun and bragging rights — not for trophies. Games are organized with minimal adult supervision and just enough refereeing to keep things flowing.

From our first small pickup sessions at the Montavilla Cage, to the King of the Court games at La Canchita, to our most recent outdoor tournament supported by our friends at Soccer Chance Academy, this community has continued to grow.

Each event brings together players from different neighborhoods, clubs, and backgrounds who share one thing in common — a genuine love for the game.

Parents are welcome to stay and watch from the bleachers or drop off and pick up by 4 PM.

6v6 pickup style tournament (72 kids!)

🎒 What to Bring

• Soccer shoes (turf or cleats)

• White jersey

• Black shorts & socks

• Plenty of water

• Light snack

Please remind players that all snacks must be eaten outside the turf area — last time we had a big cleanup, so let’s help keep the facility in good shape!

Creating balanced teams takes time, and last-minute dropouts make it very difficult to organize. Not everyone will get to play, but I’ll do my best to accommodate as many kids as possible. Thank you!

At Fútbol Fundamentals, we help young soccer players build the technical, mental, and emotional foundations to enjoy the game for life.

Most of our work focuses on personalized 1-on-1 training, helping players sharpen their fundamentals and confidence year-round.

Our winter small group program at MJCC has also been a huge success, and we're now offering it at the Portland Indoor for players who want to compete and have fun in a high-energy environment.

SCA is one of the few clubs in Portland that truly prioritizes individual player development over winning at all costs, creating an environment where kids can grow both on and off the field — and that’s a big reason why I enjoy coaching there :)
